Brocade from Croatia

6 March 2014

IMG_1761This hand woven cotton piece is brocaded with multiple strand of red cotton singles.  The plain weave ground cloth has subtle stripes of a heavier warp and this heavier warp is used as the tie down for the continuous brocading weft.  The same tie downs are used for every supplementary weft creating columns in the red design.   The backside shows very little red but the ground is a bit distorted around the heavy brocading.

This is similar to Dukagang in Sweden.  It also occurs in Latin American brocades.

I like the leaf veins created by omission.  A bold and effective design.
